FELDENKRAIS® MOVEMENT DESCRIPTION |
Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® lessons are a sensory-motor approach to learning based on the premise that becoming more aware of one’s movements, exerting less effort, and moving in more organic ways, can relieve stress, reduce pain, enhance agility and make life more enjoyable. These lessons are helpful and interesting for people at all levels of ability including those who are extremely healthy and those with serious injuries.
Contrasting most movement systems that focus on teaching predefined and static forms, Feldenkrais® focuses on function rather than form and does not have a goal of attaining an ideal body type or physical construction, or achieving "correct" positions or postures. Feldenkrais® is intended to improve the sensibility, awareness and quality of movement through one's own body feedback through diverse, ingenious movement experiments.
It is based on cutting-edge scientific theory and on the understanding of how our brain and nervous system learns, organizes movement and transforms our body, mind and spirit. It is an alternative and complementary approach to physical therapy programs, personal improvement, and fitness training. It helps people of all ages overcome pain and limitation and achieve lifetime fitness and vitality. Feldenkrais® stands today as a new western discipline equal in scope to Yogic practices, martial arts traditions and other psycho-physical approaches to human development that have originated in the East. It bridges science, arts and education as a true 21st century approach to optimal health, well being, and personal development.
